The Walnut and Zelkova Wood Wall Clock from Solae Design uses two woods rather than one. The face is walnut, dark and close-grained, and the frame around it is Zelkova, which is lighter and more open. The contrast is what gives the clock its depth: the face reads as a distinct disc rather than as a single turned piece with the hands stuck on top.

Numeral markers sit directly on the walnut, cut with enough contrast to be read across a room without printing a busy dial over the grain. It is a quiet piece of design in the literal sense too — a silent sweep movement drives the hands, so there is no tick at all, which is the difference between a clock you can put in a bedroom and one you cannot. Four face styles are offered across the same two-wood construction, varying the marker layout rather than the materials.

At twelve inches across it is a standard wall clock rather than an oversized one, sized to sit above a desk, beside a doorway, or on a plain stretch of wall where a larger piece would crowd.
