• Choosing a layer count: layers add depth and presence rather than width — single layer is 4.3″ deep, double 8.7″, three-layer 13″, so pick on ceiling height once the diameter is set
• In a row over an island: use a single-layer size and space centres 24–30″ apart, keeping the end pendants at least 6″ inside the counter edge
• Over a floor or stair tread: keep the lowest point at least 7 ft above the walking surface
• Suspension: adjustable height at installation

The Strata Glass Disc Pendant from Solae Design is built from mouth-blown glass discs stacked in one, two or three layers. Each disc is formed individually, so the thickness varies slightly across its width and the light that passes through it varies with it, giving the fixture a depth that machine-pressed glass never achieves.

Three colours are offered and each does something different to the light. Smoke grey is the most restrained, cutting brightness and reading almost architectural against pale walls. Green is the coolest and works well over stone or marble surfaces. Amber pushes the output toward gold and is the natural choice above a dining table or a bar. Sizes run from a 9.5 inch single layer, small enough to hang in a row over an island, up to a three-layer 17.7 inch fixture substantial enough to anchor a dining room on its own.

Warm Light and TRIAC dimmable warm versions are available, and the dimmable option is worth having anywhere the same room shifts between working and eating. Suspension height is adjustable at installation. Because the glass is mouth-blown, small bubbles and slight asymmetry are characteristic rather than defects. Hardwired installation should be completed by a qualified electrician following local codes.
