Osier Woven Fruit Basket

The Osier Woven Fruit Basket from Solae Design is a round open basket in imitation rattan, with an open hollow weave and a turned wooden handle across the top. The weave is left visible throughout — there is no lining and no solid base, so the construction is the whole of the design rather than something concealed behind a finish.

The open construction is the functional part. Air moves freely through the sides and underneath, which is what fruit needs: sealed in a solid bowl it sweats and spoils faster, while an open weave lets moisture escape and keeps the bottom layer from going soft before the top is eaten. Imitation rattan holds this open structure without the brittleness of natural cane, so it tolerates kitchen humidity and the occasional wipe-down far better.

Works as a fruit bowl on a kitchen counter, a bread basket on a table, or open storage for snacks and household odds and ends. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately; do not submerge it or put it in a dishwasher, as prolonged soaking will loosen the weave. Line it with a cloth if you are serving food directly from it. Wash and dry fruit before storing it, as residual moisture will sit in the weave and mark it.
