Description
The Orbis Hand-Cut Stone Table Lamp from Solae Design is turned from a single block of natural stone into soft spherical curves, with a slim gold metal fitting as the only interruption. Four stones are offered, white alabaster, black marble, beige travertine and green marble, and each behaves quite differently once the lamp is switched on.
Stone is not a shade material by default; it works here because the sections are cut thin enough to transmit light. Alabaster and travertine glow warmly through the wall of the form, while the marbles hold more light and throw it upward and downward instead, so the same lamp reads soft in one finish and graphic in another. Veining and tone are drawn from the block and never repeat between pieces.
Scaled at 11.8 inches across and 17.7 inches tall for a bedside table, a console, or a living room side table where its weight can be appreciated up close. Natural stone chips if knocked against hard edges; handle by the body rather than the fitting. Dust with a soft dry cloth and avoid acidic cleaners. Plug configurations for US, UK, AU and EU are available. Each lamp arrives with its own veining, so ordering a pair gives two related pieces.
