The Halden Beechwood Dome Floor Lamp from Solae Design takes its cues from Scandinavian design of the 1970s, when lighting was still allowed to be cheerful. A wide dome shade sits on a slender beech stem, and the proportions are deliberately generous at 28.4 inches across and 59 inches tall, so the fixture reads as a piece of furniture rather than as an accessory.

Beech gives the frame its pale, close grain and keeps the weight down; the painted dome does the optical work, pushing a broad downward wash of light across whatever sits beneath it. Three colourways are offered, white, beige and coffee, each against natural beech, spanning crisp to warm without ever going loud enough to date the room around it.

Best placed over a reading chair, at the end of a sofa, or beside a dining nook where the dome can hover unobstructed above the surface below.
