The Open-Frame Geometric Wall Clock from Solae Design has no dial to speak of. The numerals and the backing plate are gone, leaving an abstract metal armature and a set of gold-toned needle hands that appear to float against whatever wall color sits behind them. The wall becomes the face of the clock, which is why it reads as sculpture first and timepiece second.

A silent sweep quartz movement drives the hands. There is no second-hand tick, which matters more than it sounds on a piece this size: an open frame gives a ticking movement nothing to muffle it, so the sweep is doing acoustic work as well as visual. In a home office or a quiet living room the clock stays silent at any distance. Both hang flat and cast a light shadow of their own frame onto the wall behind them.

Two sizes are offered. The smaller spans just under two feet and suits a chimney breast, a hallway or the space above a console. The larger runs to nearly two and a half feet and is meant to anchor a wall on its own, without other art competing beside it. Best for living rooms, offices and entryways where a plain round clock would disappear.
