Viola Marble Cylinder Flush Mount

The Viola Marble Cylinder Flush Mount from Solae Design is built around a hollowed cylinder of Calacatta Viola, an Italian white marble shot through with deep plum and burgundy veining that only becomes fully visible once the stone is lit from within. Unlit, it reads as a solid pale block; lit, it changes character entirely.

At 4.7 inches across and 3.9 inches deep it is deliberately small. The marble cylinder caps to the ceiling on a slim metal plate, so it sits close and reads as a detail rather than a fixture, the kind of thing noticed on a second visit to a room rather than the first. Backlighting is what makes the stone perform: transmitted light picks up the mineral veining and turns an opaque block into something closer to stained glass.

Suited to a hallway, a powder room, a stair landing, a walk-in wardrobe, or any low-ceilinged space where a pendant would intrude on headroom. Each cylinder is cut from natural stone and the veining pattern is unique to the piece. Takes a standard E26 or E27 lamp. Dust with a soft dry cloth and avoid acidic cleaners, which etch marble. Hardwired installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician following local codes.
