Kyoto Fabric Lantern Pendant

The Kyoto Fabric Lantern Pendant from Solae Design takes the lantern, one of the oldest shapes in lighting, and rebuilds it in white fabric over a slim gold metal frame. The fabric is the reason it looks the way it does: light passes through the material rather than bouncing off it, so the whole shade glows evenly instead of throwing a bright disc onto the floor.

That soft, wrapped quality makes it forgiving over a dining table, where a harsher pendant would put glare in the eyes of anyone sitting across from you. Three sizes are offered. The 9.8 inch version is small enough to hang in a row of two or three over a kitchen island or a breakfast bar; the 15.7 inch suits a standard dining table; and the 19.7 inch works as a single centrepiece in a living room, a stairwell or a bedroom with height to spare.

The gold frame reads warm against white ceilings and picks up brass fittings elsewhere in the room. Suspension height is adjustable at installation, and a hanging point roughly thirty inches above a table surface is a reliable starting point. Hardwired installation should be completed by a qualified electrician in line with local codes. Dust the fabric shade lightly and keep it dry.
