The Japandi Black Frame Wall Clock from Solae Design sets a rectangle inside a circle, which is the whole design. A plain black ring would be anonymous; the rectangular centerpiece breaks the symmetry and gives the eye something to resolve, so the clock holds attention for a moment longer than a plain dial does.

Gold hands against black is the only color in the piece, and it is doing the work of legibility as well as of decoration.
