The Clock Form LED Table Lamp from Solae Design borrows the silhouette of a round mantel clock and builds a lamp inside it. The reference is in the proportion rather than in any fake dial — a circular head on a squared base, the shape a clock has had on mantelpieces for a century, doing a different job here.

It is brighter than most decorative bedside lamps: 1200 lumens from a 12-watt LED, which is enough to read by properly rather than only enough to see the room by. Because it dims infinitely rather than in steps, that output can be taken right down to a low bedside glow without a jump between settings, so one lamp covers both uses. The circular head also throws light forward rather than only down, which is what makes it usable as a reading light.

Control is by touch on the body, so there is no switch to find in the dark and no cord-mounted rocker to fish for behind a nightstand. The body is aluminum with a plastic shade, and it is supplied for either 100–120V or 220–240V supply, selected at checkout. At about eleven by sixteen inches it fits a standard nightstand.
