Basalt Coarse Terracotta Vase

The Basalt Coarse Terracotta Vase from Solae Design is thrown in coarse pottery clay and finished in a matte black glaze that leaves the grain of the body visible through it. The intended effect is imitation stone rather than polished ceramic — closer to a quarried object than a glazed vessel, and it reads that way from across a room.

The coarseness is deliberate. A grogged clay body carries visible particles that catch light unevenly across the surface, so the form reads as textured and slightly irregular even where the profile is symmetrical. The abstract shape is built for arranging rather than display alone: the neck is narrow enough to hold a few stems upright without a frog, while the body has the mass to stay stable when those stems are tall or heavy.

Works with dried stems, single branches, or empty as a sculptural object on a shelf or console. Rinse with cool water and dry thoroughly; do not put it in a dishwasher. If the interior is unglazed, use a liner or test it with water before a long arrangement, as coarse terracotta can seep slowly and mark a wooden surface underneath. Each piece is thrown individually, so height and profile vary slightly between vases of the same nominal size.
